Marie Catherine is mentioned in the documents as free mulatto (mulâtre libre) and there is reference to the document confirming her freedom. She was a daugher of "capresse libre" mother without surname and unknown father, possibly someone called L'Ange. According to the Universal Dictionary, Historical, Literary Pantheon and Illustrated Encyclopedia from 1852 the term "capresse" described someone of mulatto and black descent.
